I’ve watched my boys step onto the field in all kinds of moments… confident, tired, frustrated, locked in. And you can usually tell pretty quickly how the game might go. Not because of their talent, but because of their connection.
When they’re connected to their purpose, their training, and their team… everything looks different. There’s a steadiness. A confidence. A peace, even in pressure.
But when that connection feels off, even just a little… you see it. The timing is off. The decisions feel rushed. The joy isn’t quite there.
And isn’t that exactly how it is in our walk with God?
In John 15:5, Jesus says:
“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”
Not some things.
Not less effective things.
Nothing.

What Does It Mean to Abide?
Abiding isn’t complicated, but it is intentional.
It’s choosing to stay close.
It’s waking up and inviting God into your day before the noise starts.
It’s pausing in the middle of chaos and remembering where your strength comes from.
It’s trusting Him in the waiting, not just praising Him in the wins.
“Remain in me, as I also remain in you.” — John 15:4
It’s not about perfection.
It’s about connection.
Just like a branch doesn’t fight to produce fruit… it simply stays attached to the vine.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5
When We Try to Do It Alone
We’ve all had those seasons.
Where we’re busy.
Where we’re tired.
Where we slowly drift into doing life in our own strength.
And maybe everything still looks “fine” on the outside…
But inside, there’s a dryness.
A striving.
A pressure to perform.
A quiet knowing that something is missing.
“I am the Lord your God, who teaches you what is best for you…” — Isaiah 48:17
Apart from Him… we may still be moving, but we’re not truly thriving.
The Beauty of Staying Connected
When we remain in Him, something shifts.
Peace replaces pressure.
Clarity replaces confusion.
Strength shows up in places we didn’t think we had any left.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” — Philippians 4:13
And the fruit?
It shows up naturally.
Not forced.
Not manufactured.
Just evidence of a life rooted in Him.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…” — Galatians 5:22-23
A Gentle Reminder: Stay Connected to the Vine
If you’ve been feeling stretched, tired, or just a little disconnected…
This is your reminder:
You don’t have to carry it all.
“Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” — 1 Peter 5:7
You don’t have to figure everything out.
“In all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” — Proverbs 3:6
You don’t have to strive for what only God can produce.
Just stay connected.
Return to the Vine.
Journaling Reflection
Take a few quiet moments and sit with these:
- Where in my life do I feel disconnected or stretched thin right now?
- Am I relying more on my own strength or truly abiding in Him?
- What does “staying connected” practically look like in my daily routine?
- What fruit am I reflecting in my life, and am I rooted in the One who produces it?
- What is one small step I can take today to intentionally remain in Him?
“Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10

Dear Lord,
Keep my heart close to You.
When I start to rely on my own strength, gently pull me back.
Teach me what it means to truly abide… not just in the quiet moments, but in the middle of my everyday life.
Help me stay connected to You so that my life naturally bears fruit that points back to You.
Amen.
